Introduction to Materials & Lesson 1 - Marilee gets you started with the basics. Get ready to be adventurous and have some fun!
Lesson 2: Creative Brushwork - Just a few good brushes open doors to interesting shapes as you explore the surprising ways they can be used in your painting. Think of this as a playground for your brushes and imagination. Demonstrations will guide you as you discover secrets of brush control. You are building confidence and your skills to use in your paintings.
Lesson 3: Understanding Color Mixing doesn’t have to be a mystery. In this video, you use only three colors to mix and create dozens of others. The color wheel becomes a helpful reference point for you, and it’s fun to fill it in with your own mixes. Marilee shows you how. This lesson greatly expands your color options for all your upcoming paintings!
Lesson 4 Chinese Brush Painting- Based on the ancient Chinese art of ink painting, simple strokes of your brushes, and simple shapes create elegant and dramatic themes for pleasing paintings.
Lesson 5 Skies of All Kinds - Skies add mood, weather, and seasons to your paintings. Washes, blotting, and wet-on-wet techniques combine to create starter inspiration for your landscape paintings in future lessons. Have fun as Marilee guides you to create a variety of painted skies, and shows you a special trick in a bonus lesson.
Lesson 6 & 7 - Combine Dry Brushing and Wet Paint techniques to create textures and landscape elements you will use in your own paintings. Follow along and then create your own trees, grasses, buildings, fences, and other ideas you have for interesting shading and textures.
Lesson 8 & 9 Layering Landscapes - Using one of your sky paintings, layer in the landscape in the middle ground and foreground. Techniques to add details include an effective use of color, salt, and scraping. See the drama of adding contrast. Marilee shows you how and when to do these things.
Lesson 10 Sunset Reflections - Paint a sunset sky if you don’t have one saved. Then layer the midde ground below it. See how to paint believable and colorful reflections, and combine the previous lessons’ techniques and tips. You are creating your own special times and places!
Lesson 11 Masking a Summer Scene - Save the pristine white on your paper while sweeping worry-free washes of paint over and around it for a fun, surprising result. Add details before and after. This is a valuable technique you will use often and make people wonder “How did you do that?”
Lesson 12 & 13 Masking Techniques for a Winter Scene - Paint 2 winter scenes with snow, with more colors than just white, and masking natural, irregular shapes with rubber cement. Marilee shows you how it’s done with tips along the way to create a soft winter landscape.
